Embers is proud to announce that, through our Legacy Education Program, we have 5 new students enrolled in higher education this year. We now have a total of 11 students receiving the education and training they need to pursue professional careers and break the cycle of intergenerational poverty for themselves and their families.
This year, we are thrilled to see such diverse interests from our new cohort of students, as they pursue careers in:
- Electrical Engineering
- Aviation Engineering (to become a pilot)
- Aviation (to become a flight attendant)
- Fashion Design
Through Legacy Education, Embers International provides financial support and access to higher education for at-risk youths and survivors of trafficking. All of our participants are the first generation in their families to receive formal education. Upon securing gainful employment, our graduates are invited to invest in the futures of the next round of participants by offering mentorship and financial support, creating a sustainable cycle of hope.
GIVE TODAY TO HELP US SUPPORT MORE CHILDREN
In just a few days, the entire Embers team will attend the Christian Alliance for Orphans ("CAFO") Summit from September 28-30 in Atlanta, Georgia. CAFO unites more than 200 respected organizations and over 850 church members to effectively care for orphans and vulnerable children. The Summit hosted by CAFO is a global hub of connection, learning, and action for what Christianity Today calls “the burgeoning orphan care movement.”
At the Summit, our own Haejin Shim Fujimura, CEO, will give an important keynote speech about Embers' work of justice with a specific focus on new creation. In addition to Haejin, the Summit will feature other dynamic thought-leaders, including Curt Thompson MD (Author & Speaker) and Tony Dungy (Former NFL Head Coach). Moreover, our team will meet many participants and introduce Embers at our own booth, rubbing elbows with other like-minded organizations doing significant work to protect vulnerable children.
A new global report was released this month that highlights some harrowing data: there are now nearly 50 million people trapped in modern slavery at any time around the world. This is a 25% increase, or 10 million more people, since the last estimates reported five years ago.
Women and children are disproportionally affected: one out of every four is a child and four out of five in forced commercial sexual exploitation are women or girls.
We know what needs to be done at the national and global levels - effective policies and regulations, public-private partnerships, vibrant civil society – but what can we really do about these terrible findings as an individual or a small community, as a group or a company?
We can find hope in Embers’ work through supporting and participating in the protection, restoration and empowerment of children, youth and families living in the red-light districts in the poorest communities in India. As embers can start a fire, our programs are designed to ignite generational transformation and freedom from exploitation.
We are excited to launch a new program this fall in which we will walk alongside women who have left the sex trade on a new path to sustained restoration and reintegration into society. We will also continue to support their children to access educational opportunities so that the cycle of violence and exploitation breaks, one household at a time.
We invite you to join us in this effort.
With Gratitude,
Kathryn Paik
